Holy Table

A new Communion Table was dedicated on 21 January 2001. The original challenge to create a new Communion Table followed the re-ordering of the church in 1996. It was hoped to use oak from the old choir stalls which had been removed at that time. Originally it had been planned to use the two pew ends, the carved panels of Andrew the fisherman and of St Etheldreda. However, the design incorporating these proved too unwieldy. After the rejection of the first design there was a lively interchange of ideas with the remit being to produce a table with an open structure and being light in appearance. Oliver Heywood produced the final design. It is intended to reflect the surroundings and act as a prophetic sign for the the celebration of Communion.

The lightness of the visual impression is intended to symbolise the kingdom of God, being clear, firm and strong but not intended to be heavily imposed upon us.

Shaped arches match the stone arches above. Looking at the chancel east window reveals three arches in the same pattern - the Trinity - and within the window arches is the central figure of Jesus, the Christ. Similarly, at the centre of the table is the cross, holding it all together.

A closer look at the handiwork reveals many blemishes, some due to the use of this wood second hand, representing the blemishes we all share. Individually and corporately we have the cross at our centre providing our integrity and holding us all together.

The table is legless, having only arms held up in praise to God.

St Andrew's, Histon is delighted that the table was designed and created within the local community. The table was made by members of the congregation, Martin Thompson and Charles Norman.

Dedication Prayer of the new Communion Table

Heavenly Father, we thank You for the way You have used the gifts and talents of Your servants, Martin, Charles and Oliver, so that the redundant pews could be transformed into this beautiful Communion Table.

Thank You that whilst You are changeless, You seek to make all things new. As we dedicate this Communion Table, we pray that we too shall be renewed and restored, by the power of Your Holy Spirit.

As we meet around this table to proclaim the death and resurrection of Your Son, Jesus Christ, and to receive the bread and wine, we ask that You will nourish and feed us spiritually. Renew us, unite us and equip us to share the Good News in our generation of Jesus Christ who died and rose again for us. Amen.
